I love watching these herds. Unfortunately, these last several years many of the herds are showing a great number of Elk with Hoof Rot. In a nutshell, it tends to lame some of the older animals. In this one clip I just made available, you can see the effects on the animals in the rear of the herd.
I don’t get as close to them as I used to. There has been too many bears and big cats following the herds lately. Probably due to the more available and lame animals. Nothing more magnificent than these elk in the wild. The Olympic Peninsula has many herds and this time of year, January, they come down to the lower areas and easy to film. Well, not easy, but you can get to them if you work on it.
